fitting steering column bush
I would like some advice on fitting a new lower steering column bush, its the newer plastic version NOT the felt one. Where-abouts does it live and is it a pain of a job? Any info/tips would be great!!

Steering column cover
Hi there, After driving about in my dads classic at the weekend, I need some help! Its a 93 L plate Cooper, with a sportpack, straight through exhaust and perfromance air filter - its my transport when I go home and I love it! Keep trying to buy it from him but he wont let me. However.... It has the most annoying rattle known to man. The plastic cover over the steering column is missing the screw on the left hand side to hold it in place. I tried various screws at the weekend to try and fit but to no avail - anyone know what the right screw length and width should be? Thanks! Euan.

Connection between steering column and rack
Hello, I just got a Siva Moonbug which is a 1971 miniature beach buggy kit based on a mini. Im not too happy with the way the way the steering column is joind to the rack - there a pinch block on the shaft out of the rack which has a couple of holes in, onto which the steering column is bolted directly. Is this the way it is on a mini, or should there be some sort of universal joint here? It just seems to me that if the column flexes (which it does), something might snap. Thanks for any help,

steering column
hi everyone
just recently noticed on my little beast that the steering column seems to be loose.by this i mean u can push the steering wheel up and down and at the bottom of the column u can see the column is loose and moving around and rattling, and is especially noticable over bumps. i've heard this can be some felt pads that have worn away or does it sound like the whole column needs to be changed.
p.s does anyone know of a good mini friendly garage around the herts/beds area as i'm having trouble finding who seems to know what they're doing on minis!
many thanks

yeah, on the later minis, i'e mk4 onwards its a plastic bush type thigy. dead easy to fix, remove the wheel, undo and slide the top column support bracket out of the way and simply slide the column outer off (with wires disconected and key at stage one) you may find that the plastic bush has just moved. May be easier to just buy a second hand column, although you should be able tp get the bush from somewhere> cheers beno

Steering Column Adjustment for MPI Mini
I've recently bought a steering column adjuster for a MPI (airbag model) Mini but it didn't come with any instructions on how to fit it. There are loads of nice technical articles for non-MPI models on the web but I cannot find any for MPI models. The bracket is completely different (it's more of a block than a bracket)to the normal non-MPI bracket and I have no idea of how I would attach it.
Has anyone fitted one of these before and if so, would you mind sharing your knowledge with me?

You could always phone Wood & Pickett and ask them: -

Steering column drop...
I have finallygot around to fitting a steering column drop bracket to my beloved (1990 Rover Checkmate). However, when I've come to undo the bolt to put the bracket in, it is a security-type bolt i.e. rounded heads and one conical shaped also?!?!?!
Are these standard fitment in a Rover Mini, and what would be the best way to remove? I have tried chiselling and mole-grips to no avail. I would try a hacksaw, but there is n't really room to get in there with one.
Thanks for any info in advance.

Lower steering column bush
Hi,
I have just purchased a Lower steering column bush for a mini open classic, thinking it just slid along the shaft, but it doesnot......Am i now right in thinking that I have to remove the steeing column to fit the bush into position? Any guidance would be a great help.
Also on the Open classic would anyone know where I could get the "fabric" Wabasto sunroof repaired/replaced. The roof works fine, however there is a slight tear about 5/6mm near the end where the material meet the front end of the sunroof. This can only get worse....Aain any help would be appriciated.

Often difficult to pinpoint the source of noises as they easily transmit from place to place. I recently had big knocking noises at low speed on reversing off the drive and rebuilt the front suspension, new rubbers on the tie bars and arms, and checked the torque of the tower bolts. I also replaced the springs but I doubt this is the cause of your noises. Check the tower bolt then after that it is probably an overhaul job to some degree IMO.

Steering Column splines
The splines should start at the bottom of the column. From your description it sounds like maybe they've been stripped? Perhaps a previous owner drove it without the pinch-bolt. I would look for a second-hand replacement - must be thousands of them about.

Thanks Tim, I suspect a dodgy column was fitted following a head on collision a few years back. May not have needed to replace rack ! Living in Cornwall makes getting stuff a little more difficult.

Somerford Mini are to the east of Bristol. It should be quicker and cheaper to get spares into Cornwall from there rather than London. They also seem to be much faster on turn around of orders as well although they can be a little more expensive so it will pay to shop around if you can wait a few days.

Play in steering column
Hi, recently bought my first mini and I'm making my way through the issues (oil leaks and a clutch already!) I have about half an inch of play in the steering column. I've been told its not dangerous as yet. Any help on how to fix this?
